The Town

The Town is a love letter to Oakland. Created as part of a client's response to an RFP at OAK Airport, the book showcases the vibrant, diverse community that characterizes the East Bay community, lovingly nicknamed The Town.

We started the project with a deep dive to find out what makes the city unique by speaking with locals, restauranteurs, and business owners to get a picture of the "real Oakland". From there, I led the design process and contributed to the writing and editing of copy. I worked extensively with a local book binder to get the final product just right: a satin hardcover, a vellum interior spread overlaid with maps of Oakland's transit system, and a hand-constructed foam container inside the back cover to fit an iPad with a short film that accompanied the book.
